Ayad Allawi

Early Life and Exile

Ayad Allawi is an Iraqi politician who was Prime Minister of Iraq from 2004 to 2005. He is the leader of the secular Iraqi National Accord political coalition. Allawi is a Shia Muslim and a physician by profession.

Allawi lived outside Iraq for more than 30 years before returning after the overthrow of Saddam Hussein in 2003.

Political Career

In the parliamentary elections held on March 7, 2010, Allawi's bloc, "Al-Iraqiya", won 91 of the 325 seats in parliament. This made Allawi the apparent frontrunner to become Prime Minister once again.

Prime Ministership

Allawi served as Prime Minister of Iraq from 2004 to 2005. His government was responsible for overseeing the transition from Saddam Hussein's dictatorship to a democratic government. Allawi's government also faced significant challenges, including the insurgency and violence that plagued Iraq during this period.
