Bai Chongxi: A Renowned Chinese General
Early Life and EducationBai Chongxi was born in 1893 in Guilin, Guangxi Province, to a Muslim family tracing its origins to Nanjing. In 1907, he enrolled in the Army Primary School but had to withdraw due to illness.
After the 1911 Xinhai Revolution, he joined the Guangxi Student Army and traveled to Hubei Province. He later studied at the Wuchang Army Preparatory Academy and the renowned Baoding Military Academy, which produced a significant portion of China's military leaders.
Rise to Prominence
Upon graduating from Baoding Military Academy, Bai became a commander in the 1st Division of the Guangxi Army. In 1921, he met Sun Yat-sen in Guangzhou alongside his classmate Huang Shaoxiong.
The New Guangxi Clique
In 1924, Bai joined forces with Huang and Li Zongren to form the New Guangxi Clique. They established the Guangxi Pacification Army with Li as commander-in-chief, Huang as deputy commander, and Bai as chief of staff. By August, they defeated the Old Guangxi Clique, bringing Guangxi under their control and into the Chinese Republic.
Northern Expedition and Civil War
During the Northern Expedition in 1926, Bai became deputy chief of staff of the National Revolutionary Army (NRA). He played a role in the Shanghai Massacre of communists in April 1927. Bai also fought against the warlord Sun Chuanfang and Tang Shengzhi.
Conflicts with the Central Government
After the Northern Expedition, Chiang Kai-shek attempted to curtail the power of local warlords, leading to further conflict. In 1929, Bai was defeated in a war against the Central Government and fled to Vietnam. However, later that year, he aligned with Li, Huang, and Zhang Fakui to regain control of Guangxi and attack Guangdong. In 1930, Bai and Li allied with Feng Yuxiang and Yan Xishan against Chiang during the Central Plains War.
Alliance and Reconciliation
In 1931, after the "September 18 Incident," the New Guangxi Clique sought reconciliation with the Central Government. In April 1932, Li became Chief Pacifier of Guangxi, with Bai as his deputy. Together with Guangxi's governor, Huang Xuchu, they formed a ruling triumvirate.
Anti-Japanese Campaign and Later Years
In May 1936, Bai, Li, and Chen Jitang formed the "Army for Resisting Japan and Saving the Nation" but their plans were thwarted by Chiang. After the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War in July 1937, Bai became deputy chief of the NRA General Staff and director of the Department of Combat Training. He advocated for guerrilla warfare over large-scale battles but was forced to command troops in conventional engagements.
