Biography of Carey Lowell
Carey Lowell was born on February 11, 1961, in Huntington, New York. She spent her childhood and adolescence in Libya, Holland, Virginia, and Texas. As the daughter of a geologist, she was hired by the Ford modeling agency right after finishing high school. During her college years, she worked as a model for Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein before deciding to pursue a career in acting.
Early Career
Lowell's first theater experience took place at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York. In 1986, she made her film debut in "Club Paradise" and also appeared in "Dangerously Close" and "Downtwisted" the same year. It was during the filming of the comedy "Me and Him" in 1988 that she met her future husband, Griffin Dunne.
Rise to Fame
In 1989, Lowell became the sixteenth Bond girl, playing the role of CIA agent Pam Bouvier alongside Timothy Dalton in the film "Licence to Kill". She then had a notable role in William Friedkin's horror film "The Guardian" in 1990. Although her next film, "Road to Ruin" in 1991, did not make a big impact, Lowell received recognition for her performance as Tom Hanks' deceased wife in Nora Ephron's romantic comedy "Sleepless in Seattle" in 1993.
Return to Modeling and Continued Acting
After her role in "Sleepless in Seattle," Lowell briefly returned to the modeling industry, working for Revlon. However, she continued to take on small roles in films. She appeared in Warren Beatty and Annette Bening's "Love Affair" in 1994 and received critical acclaim for her portrayal of a bank teller in the low-budget film "Leaving Las Vegas" alongside Nicolas Cage.
In 1995, she also starred in the short drama "The Duke of Groove," directed by her then-husband Griffin Dunne. They separated for a period of time after the film. Lowell's television achievements include her starring role as Dottie in the comedy series "A League of Their Own" and her appearance in the sequel to "A Fish Called Wanda" in 1995.
Later Life
Facing difficulty in finding work, Lowell decided to attend summer courses in documentary filmmaking at New York University in 1996. However, she was cast in the film "Law & Order" on the first day of the course, forcing her to withdraw.
After leaving the series "Law & Order" in 1998, Lowell wanted to spend more time with her daughter. She has a son, Homer James Jigme Gere, born in February 2000, from her previous romantic relationship with actor Richard Gere.
