Carl Anton Ewald, a renowned German gastroenterologist and physiologist, was born on October 30, 1845, in Berlin. He pursued his medical education at various universities in Germany, including Berlin, Heidelberg, and Bonn, where he obtained his doctorate in medicine in 1870.

Career and Contributions

After earning his degree, Ewald became an assistant to the distinguished German clinician Friedrich Theodor Frerichs. In 1882, he was appointed as an associate professor at the University of Berlin, where he also served as editor for the "Berliner klinische Wochenschrift" (Berlin Clinical Weekly). In 1888, he became the chief physician of the internal medicine department at the Empress Augusta Hospital in Berlin.

Ewald's significant contributions to gastroenterology led him to establish the Empress Augusta Hospital as a renowned center for digestive diseases. He is widely known for devising the "Ewald test meal" (also known as the "Boas-Ewald test meal"), which is still utilized today in the examination of gastric secretions.
