Early Life and Education
On May 2, 1950, in the village of Nizhny Dalyan, Tajikistan, Salom Barakaev was born to a servant father and a homemaker mother. He enrolled in school in 1955 and later joined the Tajik State Medical University in 1966, graduating with honors in 1972.
Academic Achievements
Barakaev continued his studies at the Moscow Medical Academy, earning a Candidate of Science degree in 1983 with his dissertation on "Fibercolonoscopy with Target Biopsy in the Diagnosis of Inflammatory and Neoplastic Lesions of the Colon." In 1991, he obtained his doctorate with a thesis on "Laser Therapy in the Complex Treatment of Chronic Diseases of the Upper Digestive Tract and Hepato-Biliary System."
Career in Gastroenterology
From 1975 to 1992, Barakaev worked at the Research Institute of Gastroenterology of the Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan, rising to the position of Deputy Director. He introduced colonofibroscopy and laser treatment methods to Tajikistan and established the country's first laser treatment laboratory for internal diseases in 1985.
International Experience
After a brief stint in Iran as a practicing physician and lecturer in Mashhad, Barakaev returned to Tajikistan in 1996.
Decanship and Legacy
Until his untimely demise, Barakaev served as the Dean of the Tajik State Medical University's branch in Khujand. His contributions to medicine include:
- 114 scientific publications, including 7 inventions and recommendations
- 16 articles published internationally
- Establishment of the Tajik Society of Gastroenterologists- Membership in the Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan
- Role as editor of the journal "Problems of Gastroenterology"
Tragic Death
On December 15, 1997, Barakaev and his wife, Malika, tragically lost their lives in an airplane crash en route to Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. They left behind a legacy of medical advancements and academic excellence.
