Early Life and EducationDonald Castell, a renowned American gastroenterologist, is a Professor of Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. He holds degrees in B.S. and M.D. from the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, where he completed his medical training.
Military Service and Association Presidency
Castell served as a physician in the U.S. Navy from 1959 to 1979, attaining the rank of captain. He has also held the position of President of the American Gastroenterological Association from 1998 to 1999.
Director of Esophageal Disease Program
Since October 2001, Castell has served as the Director of the Esophageal Disease Program within the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Medical University of South Carolina.
Recognition and Awards
Castell has been honored with the prestigious Julius Friedenwald Medal from the American Gastroenterological Association in 2010. Additionally, the American Gastroenterological Association Foundation for Digestive Health and Nutrition awards the Julia and Donald Castell Award for Clinical Esophageal Research, which carries a $35,000 grant.
