Claire McCaskill: A Political Force in Missouri
Early Life and EducationClaire McCaskill was born in Rolla, Missouri, and graduated from high school in Columbia, Missouri. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Missouri in 1975 and a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the same university in 1978.
Legal and Political Beginnings
McCaskill began her legal career as a clerk for the Missouri Court of Appeals in 1978. From 1978 to 1982, she served as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for Jackson County, Missouri. In 1983, she started her own private law practice.
State Politics
McCaskill entered the political arena in 1983 when she was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives, serving from 1983 to 1988. In 1992, she was elected Jackson County Prosecutor, a position she held until 1998. From 1998 to 2006, she chaired the Missouri State Auditor's Office.
Unsuccessful Gubernatorial Run
In 2004, McCaskill made an unsuccessful bid for Governor of Missouri.U.S. Senate Elections
In 2006, McCaskill was elected to the U.S. Senate, defeating Republican Jim Talent. The race was one of the most expensive Senate elections of that year, with a combined $19.8 million raised by the parties and $26 million from the candidates' personal campaign funds.
McCaskill successfully defended her Senate seat in 2012 against Republican Todd Akin. Akin drew significant public attention during the campaign for his opposition to abortion, particularly his belief that "legitimate rape" rarely results in pregnancy.
