Corina Crețu: A Romanian Politician and European Commissioner
Early Life and EducationCorina Crețu was born in Romania and graduated from the Faculty of Cybernetics at the Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies in 1989. She worked as an economist at a company in Blaj for a year before pursuing a career in journalism.
Journalism and Political Commentary
From 1990 to 1992, Crețu worked as a journalist and political commentator for various Romanian publications. She gained recognition for her insightful analysis and commentary on current events.
Presidential Advisor and Spokesperson
In 1992, Crețu was appointed as a representative of the President in Ion Iliescu's cabinet. She held this position until 1996, when she became an advisor and spokesperson for the President, as well as the head of the Department for Public Relations.
Entry into Politics
In 1996, Crețu joined the Social Democratic Party. She was elected to the Romanian Parliament in 2000 and to the Senate in 2004. As a senator, she served on the Committee on Foreign Policy and was a full member of the Romanian delegation to the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly.
European Parliament Member
Following Romania's accession to the EU in 2007, Crețu was elected to the European Parliament. She was re-elected in 2009 and 2014. During her time as an MEP, Crețu was actively involved in regional policy, economic affairs, and social welfare issues.
European Commissioner for Regional Policy
On November 1, 2014, Crețu became the European Commissioner for Regional Policy in the Juncker Commission. She was responsible for the EU's policies on regional development and cohesion.
Return to the European Parliament
On July 1, 2019, Crețu left the Juncker Commission after being elected to the European Parliament in the 2019 elections. She joined the PRO Romania party in March 2019 and represented the party in the European Parliament.
