Early Life and Education

Cynthia Ann McKinney was born in 1955 in Atlanta, Georgia, to a nurse and a law enforcement officer. She earned her undergraduate degree in international relations from the University of Southern California and her Master's degree in law and diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.

Teaching and Public Service

After graduating, McKinney worked as a high school teacher before transitioning to academia. In 1986, she entered the political arena as a candidate for the Georgia State House of Representatives.

Election to the U.S. House of Representatives

In 1992, McKinney was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as a Democrat. She became the first African American woman to represent Georgia in the House. Over the course of her tenure, which spanned from 1993 to 2003 and from 2005 to 2007, McKinney advocated for progressive policies and social justice.

Departure from the Democratic Party and Green Party Candidacy

In 2007, McKinney left the Democratic Party. In the 2008 presidential election, she ran as the Green Party nominee for president, receiving 0.12% of the popular vote. In 2020, she was the Green Party's candidate for vice president on the Aleutian Party ticket.

Subsequent Career

Following her unsuccessful presidential bid, McKinney continued her involvement in politics and activism, working on issues including environmental protection, economic justice, and global affairs. She remains an influential voice in progressive politics and a proponent of independent political action.
