Early Life and Education
Paul Hasluck was born in Perth, Western Australia and attended Perth Modern School. He graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Arts in 1938.
Public Service Career
Treasury and War ServiceHasluck began his public service career in 1939 as an officer in the Treasury. During World War II, he served in the Australian Army in the Middle East, Greece, and New Guinea. He was awarded the British Distinguished Service Order for his bravery in action.
Diplomatic Posts
After the war, Hasluck returned to the public service and held positions in the Australian High Commission in Canada and as Ambassador to Thailand. He played a key role in the establishment and early years of the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO).
Ambassadorships
In 1961, Hasluck was appointed Ambassador to Canada, followed by Ambassador to the United Nations from 1964 to 1965.
Chief Administrator of Papua New Guinea
From 1966 to 1970, Hasluck served as the Chief Administrator of the Australian Trust Territory of Papua New Guinea, overseeing the territory's transition towards self-government.
Later Career
Minister for External TerritoriesUpon his return to Australia, Hasluck was appointed Minister for External Territories from 1970 to 1973.
First Military Ombudsman
From 1973 to 1976, Hasluck served as the first Military Ombudsman, responsible for investigating complaints from members of the Australian Defense Force.
Secretary, Department of Aboriginal Affairs
From 1976 to 1979, Hasluck held the position of Secretary of the Department of Aboriginal Affairs, focusing on improving the lives of Indigenous Australians.
