Masha Gjerpen: A Career in Norwegian Politics
Early Life and EducationMasha Gjerpen was born in Trondheim, Norway, on March 5, 1973. She studied social sciences at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim and the University of Oslo.
Political Activism
Gjerpen's political journey began in the 1990s when she joined the executive committee of the regional branch of the Labour Party's youth wing (AUF) in Sør-Trøndelag. She became its chairperson in 1996-1997 and went on to serve as head of AUF nationally from 2000-2002.
Local and Regional Involvement
From 2003-2005, Gjerpen was a member of the Trondheim City Council and the executive committee of the Labour Party's Trondheim branch. She also held leadership positions in the party's Sør-Trøndelag regional branch from 2003-2009 and became its chairperson in 2009.
Professional Experience
Before her political career, Gjerpen worked for the Norwegian Professional Union of Municipal Employees (NKF) in 1999-2000. She was also a project manager in the municipality of Rissa in 2003-2004 and worked for the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions (LO) in 2004-2005.
Parliamentary Career
Gjerpen was first elected to the Norwegian Parliament (Storting) in 2005, representing the Labour Party in the Sør-Trøndelag constituency. She has been re-elected in every election since then (2009, 2013, 2017, and 2021).
Storting Leadership
In 2017, Gjerpen became the First Vice President of the Storting. In 2021, she made history by becoming only the third woman elected as President of the Storting, following Kirsti Kolle Grøndahl (1993-2001) and Tone Trøen (2018-2021). She held this position until November 23, 2021.
