Early Life and EducationDorothea Wilms, a prominent German politician, began her life in 1929. After completing her secondary education, she commenced her studies at the University of Cologne, specializing in economics, social policy, and sociology. In 1954, she graduated with a degree in economics, followed by a doctorate in 1956 for her dissertation on macroeconomic and microeconomic processes in the national economy.
Academic Career
From 1953 to 1973, Wilms served as a research associate for youth and vocational education at the Institute of the German Economy in Cologne. She subsequently headed the institute's research division for educational and social policy from 1977 to 1983, contributing significantly to the field.
Political Engagement
Wilms's political career began in 1961 when she joined the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). She held various leadership roles within the party, including serving as Deputy Federal Chairman from 1974 to 1976 and as a member of the CDU's state board in North Rhine-Westphalia from 1986 onward.
Member of Bundestag and Federal Minister
From 1976 to 1994, Wilms served as a member of the German Bundestag. In 1982, she was appointed Federal Minister for Education and Science in the first cabinet of Helmut Kohl. Following the 1987 Bundestag elections, Wilms took over as Federal Minister of Intra-German Relations on March 12, 1987.
Legacy
With Germany's reunification in 1990, the Ministry of Intra-German Relations became redundant, leading to Wilms's resignation on January 18, 1991. Throughout her career, she played a pivotal role in shaping Germany's educational and political landscape, leaving a lasting legacy as a dedicated politician.
