Early Life and SuccessEdvins Kengis is a renowned Latvian chess grandmaster and coach. Born in Latvia, Kengis has achieved numerous accolades throughout his career, including winning the Latvian Chess Championship eight times (1984, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1997, 2004, 2005).

Kengis was an active participant in various all-Union tournaments for young masters. He showcased impressive performances, placing 1st-2nd in 1980 and 3rd-4th in 1982. As part of the Soviet Union's youth team, Kengis contributed to its victory in the 1980 World Team Championship.

Edvins Kengis currently resides in Dubai, where he serves as the coach for the United Arab Emirates national chess team. His guidance has played a pivotal role in the development of Salem Saleh, who became the youngest grandmaster from the United Arab Emirates and the winner of the Asian U-16 Chess Championship.
