Early Life and Education

Pia Viitanen was born on December 17, 1966, in Haapajärvi, Finland. She pursued a diverse academic path, earning a degree in agronomy in 1992, a teaching certification in 1997 from the University of Jyväskylä, and a bachelor's degree in agronomy from Savonia University of Applied Sciences in 2000.

Political Career

Viitanen's political career commenced in 2001, when she was elected chairwoman of the council of Pielavesi. In 2007, she made a significant leap into national politics by being elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Northern Savo constituency. Her parliamentary trajectory continued when she was appointed First Deputy Chair of the Centre Party's parliamentary group in June 2015.

Member of the European Parliament

In March 2018, Viitanen succeeded Hannu Takkula as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP). She subsequently won reelection in the 2019 European Parliament elections in Finland. With her membership in the Finnish Centre Party and the European Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE), Viitanen represents a liberal-agrarian perspective in the European Parliament.
