Early Career
Elmar Bjarnason is a Swedish footballer who currently plays as a left winger for Elfsborg. His footballing journey began when he was promoted to the senior squad of Choppings in 2005. He impressed scouts from Elfsborg in a youth international match and was invited for a trial.
Debut with Elfsborg
After an impressive performance in a friendly with Elfsborg's reserve team, Bjarnason was promoted to the first team in 2006. He made his debut in the Swedish Cup against Slottskogen/Godhem, scoring a goal in the match. He earned his first league appearance in 2006 against GAIS.
Breakthrough in 2007
The 2007 season proved pivotal for Bjarnason. Elfsborg won the Swedish Super Cup with Bjarnason coming off the bench. He made his first league start and scored his first league goal in the same year. He also made his debut in the Champions League against Debrecen and the UEFA Cup against Dinamo Bucharest.
Establishing Himself as a Starter
In 2008, with the departure of Daniel Alexandersson, Bjarnason seized the opportunity to become the starting left winger. He scored in both legs of the UEFA Intertoto Cup against Hibernian, with his goal in the second leg earning particular praise. He contributed five goals and five assists in the 2008 league campaign, helping Elfsborg finish second.
Injury and Return
Bjarnason suffered a back injury in 2009, which sidelined him for the first few matches of the season. However, he returned and scored his first career brace in a game against Helsingborg. He finished the season with six goals and five assists.
Move to FC Twente
In 2010, Bjarnason made a high-profile move to FC Twente in the Netherlands. He replaced Miroslav Stoch in the team's 4-3-3 formation. Despite a promising start, Bjarnason suffered a serious ankle injury in a Champions League match against Tottenham Hotspur. His place in the team was filled by Nacer Chadli, who remained the starting left winger after Bjarnason's recovery.
Return to Elfsborg
After a difficult spell at Twente, Bjarnason returned to Elfsborg in 2017. He continued to be a key player for the club, helping them win the Swedish Championship in 2019.
International Career
Bjarnason has made 17 appearances for the Swedish national team, scoring one goal. He represented his country at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and the 2020 UEFA European Championship.
