Eugène de la Motte, a French civil servant and politician, played a significant role during the Third Republic.

Early Career

La Motte began his career as a sub-prefect in the Dinan district in 1848. He subsequently held sub-prefecture positions in Verdun (1849), Dieppe (1850), and Loire (1852).

Prefecture Appointments

In 1853, La Motte was appointed prefect of the Lozère department. He later served as prefect of Hérault (1856), Garonne (1869), and Morbihan (1869).

Election to the Chamber of Deputies

In 1876, La Motte was elected as a deputy for the Berné district. He was re-elected in 1881 with an overwhelming 67% of the vote.

Embezzlement and Exoneration

In 1871, La Motte was accused of embezzlement of public funds. However, the charges were dropped after he repaid the missing money and it was determined that he had used it for the benefit of societies in his district rather than for personal gain.

Exile and Return to Politics

Following the charges against him, La Motte fled to Switzerland. Upon his return to France, he continued his political involvement by publishing the Bonapartist newspaper "Le Courrier d'Angers."

Other Activities

In 1857, La Motte became the president of the Free Society of Agriculture, Science, Arts, and Belles-Lettres of Hérault.
