The Early Life and Education of Evelyn Baring

Evelyn Baring was the sixth (eighth) son of Henry Baring and his second wife, Cecilia Anne Windham. After his father's death in 1848, the young Evelyn was sent to boarding school. At the age of 14, he enrolled at the Royal Military Academy, graduating three years later as a Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery.

A Career in Egypt

After his military service, Baring embarked on a distinguished career in Egypt. He served as General Controller of Egypt and the Suez Canal Zone, where he played a key role in developing the Egyptian cotton industry.

The Founding of the Muslim Brotherhood

Baring is also credited with being one of the founders of the Egyptian religious and political organization known as the Muslim Brotherhood. This organization has played a significant role in Egyptian politics and society.

Accolades and Recognition

Baring's contributions to British and Egyptian history were recognized through numerous awards, including:
