Fedor Mikhailovich Litunov: A Life of Bravery and Sacrifice
Born in 1886 in Bolshaya Talovaya, Rostov Oblast, Fedor Mikhailovich Litunov hailed from a family of farmers who had relocated from Kursk Province. He was one of eight children raised by Mikhail Stepanovich and Melanya Ivanovna Litunov.
Military Career and World War I
Litunov served in the Tsarist army before the outbreak of World War I. During the war, he displayed exceptional courage in battles against the Germans, earning a promotion to the rank of non-commissioned officer.
Bolshevik Revolution and Civil War
In 1917, Litunov embraced the Bolshevik cause. He took part in the storming of the Winter Palace and became the first chairman of the village soviet in Bolshaya Talovaya.
During the Russian Civil War, Litunov raised a partisan detachment from his fellow villagers to fight against the White Guards. In July 1918, he became the commander of the 21st Cavalry Regiment, which joined Semyon Mikhailovich Budyonny's 4th Cavalry Division.
Commander of the 4th Cavalry Division
In January 1920, Litunov led a brigade of the 4th Cavalry Division in the liberation of Rostov-on-Don. By the spring of 1920, he had become the commander of the entire division and participated in battles against Polish forces.
Final Battle and Legacy
On August 19, 1920, Litunov fell in battle during heavy fighting near Lvov. His body was transported back to Bolshaya Talovaya for burial. He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner for his bravery.
Litunov's legacy as a fearless commander and ardent revolutionary continues to be honored in his hometown and throughout Russia. A monument erected in his memory stands as a testament to his sacrifice and devotion to the cause of the people.
