Early Life and Education
Filip Vujanović was born on September 1, 1954, in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. He graduated with a law degree from the University of Belgrade in 1978.
Legal and Political Career
Vujanović began his career as a prosecutor in Belgrade in 1978. After working in the judiciary, he became a lawyer in 1982. From 1993 to 1995, he served as Minister of Justice for Montenegro. He subsequently held the position of Minister of Internal Affairs from 1995 to 1998.
Prime Minister and Speaker of the Assembly
In 1998, Vujanović was appointed Prime Minister of Montenegro, a position he held until 2002. He then became Speaker of the Montenegrin Parliament in 2002.
President of Montenegro
Vujanović was elected President of Montenegro on May 11, 2003. His first term saw the declaration of Montenegro's independence in May 2006. He was reelected in 2013 with 51.2% of the vote.
NATO Membership and Recognition
Vujanović has been a strong advocate for Montenegro's membership in NATO. After the parliament ratified the accession agreement in 2017, he declared that Montenegro had secured "opportunities for its eternal existence."
