Biography of Philippe Séguin

Philippe Séguin was born on April 21, 1943, in Tunisia. He actively participated in the political life of France and held several prominent party and state positions. From 1993 to 1997, he led the National Assembly, the lower house of the French parliament. In July 1997, Séguin became the chairman of the Rally for the Republic (RPR), the leading right-wing political party in France.

Political Activism

Known as the "enfant terrible" of French conservatives, Séguin often sparked intense debates within his own party, advocating for a return to the roots of Gaullism. However, after taking the leadership position in the RPR, he became more moderate and worked hand in hand with the RPR's president, Jacques Chirac, in an effort to reclaim lost ground for the right-wing opposition.

Chairmanship of the RPR

In a nationwide vote, with over 74,000 participants, Séguin was re-elected as the chairman of the Rally for the Republic. He was the sole candidate, and more than 95 percent of the votes were cast in his favor. Séguin's continued leadership demonstrated the trust and support he enjoyed within the party.
