Friedrich Ketler, Duke of Courland and Semigallia
Birth and Early LifeFriedrich Ketler was born in Mitau, the capital of the Duchy of Courland, to Duke Gotthard Ketler and his wife, Anna of Mecklenburg-Güstrow. As the elder son, Friedrich received a comprehensive education and traveled extensively in Europe during his youth.
Division of the Duchy
Upon Gotthard Ketler's death in 1587, the Duchy of Courland was divided between his two sons, Friedrich and Wilhelm. Friedrich inherited the eastern portion (Semigallia), while Wilhelm ruled the western portion (Courland).
Rule as Duke of Courland and Semigallia
In 1616, Friedrich's younger brother, Wilhelm, was forced to leave the country due to conflicts with the nobility. Friedrich subsequently became the sole ruler of the entire Duchy.
Military Exploits
During the Polish-Swedish wars, Duke Friedrich fought alongside the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth against Sweden. In the Battle of Kircholm in 1605, he commanded a cavalry detachment of 600 horsemen.
Constitutional Reforms
In 1618, Friedrich established a new constitution, the Formula Regiminis, which granted greater autonomy to the nobility. This transformed Courland into a constitutional monarchy, sparking ongoing conflicts between the Duke and the Landtag, the regional parliament.
Succession Crisis
As Friedrich was childless, he proposed to the Landtag in 1625 to recognize his nephew, Jacob, as his heir. After several years of intense negotiations, the nobility eventually agreed.
End of Reign
In 1642, at the age of 72, Friedrich Ketler died in Mitau. He was interred in the Mitau Palace, marking the end of his reign that had spanned over two decades.
Family
Friedrich married Elisabeth Magdalena of Pomerania-Wolgast in 1600. The couple did not have children.
