Early Life and Education
Fuad Siniora was born in 1943 into a Sunni Muslim family in the coastal city of Sidon, south of Beirut. He attended the American School for Boys in Sidon and later enrolled at the American University of Beirut, where he earned a master's degree in business management. Siniora is fluent in English, French, and Arabic.
Banking and Finance Career
After completing his education, Siniora pursued a career in banking and finance. From 1977 to 1982, he held a senior position at the Central Bank of Lebanon. He then became a key executive in the business empire of his close friend, former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
Role in Hariri's Government
When Hariri was first appointed Prime Minister in 1995, Siniora was appointed Minister of Finance. He played a central role in reducing Lebanon's national debt. However, he resigned three years later following allegations of financial mismanagement, charges that were later dropped in 2003 after Hariri returned to power.
Post-Hariri Career
Since 2003, Siniora has served as the managing director of Groupe Mediterranée, which includes four banks owned by the Hariri family. He is married and has three children.
Political Affiliation
Fuad Siniora is a pro-Western politician and a strong opponent of Syrian influence in Lebanon. He considers himself the political heir of Rafik Hariri and has led the Hariri bloc in Parliament. In 2005, after the assassination of Hariri, Siniora was appointed Prime Minister, a position he held until 2009.
