Biography of Fumie Suguri

Fumie Suguri is a Japanese figure skater. She was born on December 31, 1980, in Chiba, Japan. Suguri has had a successful career, winning multiple championships and medals throughout her skating journey.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Suguri's family lived in Anchorage, Alaska, where her father worked as a pilot for the JAL airline. It was there that Suguri started skating at the age of five. When her family returned to Japan, Suguri continued her skating lessons. She won her first title as the Japanese champion in 1997 and went on to win three more consecutive titles in 2001, 2002, and 2003. She won the championship again in 2006.

International Success

In 2001, Suguri made history by becoming the first Japanese skater to win the Four Continents Championships. She went on to win this competition twice, making her the most decorated athlete in the event. Suguri also participated in the Winter Olympics in 2002, finishing fifth overall. She won a bronze medal at the World Championships in the same year, following behind Michelle Kwan and Irina Slutskaya.

In 2003, Suguri won another bronze medal at the World Championships, this time after Kwan and Elena Sokolova. The following year, she became the first Japanese skater to win the Grand Prix Final. Suguri continued to excel in her career, winning the Japanese Championships in 2006 and a silver medal at the World Championships in the same year.

Challenges and Later Career

Suguri faced challenges in her later career, struggling to qualify for the World Championships and the Grand Prix Final. She placed fourth at the Japanese Championships in 2007 and 2008, failing to qualify for the World Championships both years. Despite these setbacks, Suguri continued to compete on the international stage, earning silver at the 2009 Japanese Championships and placing eighth at the World Championships.

Coaching and Education

Suguri began her skating career under the guidance of Nobuo Sato, a ten-time Japanese champion and the father of Yuka Sato. At the age of 19, she moved to New Jersey to train with Nikolai Morozov. Suguri also trained with Oleg Vasiliev in the 2004-2005 season. She briefly trained in Moscow with Alexander Zhulin in preparation for the 2007-2008 season. Prior to the 2008-2009 season, Suguri returned to Morozov as her coach.

Suguri graduated from Waseda University, one of Japan's most prestigious universities. She is fluent in both Japanese and English due to growing up in Alaska, USA. Suguri's younger sister, Shika Suguri, also pursued figure skating at the international level.
