Early Career and Liverpool DebutHarold Barton, a native of Leigh, Lancashire, was an English footballer who played as a forward for Liverpool and Sheffield United. He joined George Patterson's Liverpool side in November 1928, but made his first-team debut on October 9, 1929, in a 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers at Anfield. Barton scored his first goal for the Reds on February 7, 1931, in a match against Newcastle, in which fellow debutant Dave Wright also found the net. However, Barton truly made his mark with a hat-trick in the Merseyside derby on February 11, 1933, where Liverpool emerged victorious with a 7-4 scoreline. Despite his impressive performance in this match, Barton's appearances in the first-team remained limited.
Season of Success and Merseyside Derby Heroics
The 1932/33 season proved to be Barton's most successful at Liverpool. He made 36 appearances and scored 13 goals, with three of those goals making him a hero among the Anfield faithful. His hat-trick in the Merseyside derby at Anfield Road on February 11, 1933, was a memorable moment for the Reds, as they triumphed 7-4. Notably, Barton never managed to score against Everton again.
Move to Sheffield United and Later Career
In June 1934, Barton moved to Sheffield United, where he remained until the outbreak of World War II. After the war, he did not resume his professional playing career.
