Henri Nallet: A Life in Politics

Early Life and Education

Henri Pierre Nallet was born on January 6, 1939, in Bergerac, Dordogne, France, to an optician. After graduating high school, he attended the Institute of Political Studies in Bordeaux and later the University of Paris, where he studied law and political science, earning degrees in social sciences, law, and political science.

Career in Agriculture

In 1966, Nallet began working for the National Federation of Farmers' Unions (FNSEA). In 1970, he joined the National Institute of Agricultural Research (INRA) as a research director. At INRA, he led a research group in economics and sociology, developing new policy objectives for left-wing political forces, particularly regarding agricultural cooperatives and union positions in agricultural policy.

Political Appointments

In July 1981, Nallet became a technical advisor in the General Secretariat of the President of France, François Mitterrand. On April 4, 1985, he was appointed Minister of Agriculture in the government of Laurent Fabius. In 1986, he was elected to the French National Assembly as a deputy for the Yonne department.

From 1988 to 1990, Nallet served as Minister of Agriculture and Forestry. From 1989 to 1998, he was mayor of the town of Tonnerre.

On October 2, 1990, Prime Minister Michel Rocard appointed Nallet as Minister of Justice in his second government. He retained the position when Édith Cresson formed a government on May 17, 1991. However, he left government on April 2, 1992, when Pierre Bérégovoy became Prime Minister.

Later Career

On June 25, 2013, Nallet was elected President of the Jean Jaurès Foundation after the death of Pierre Mauroy. He became Honorary President on November 15, 2022, when Jean-Marc Ayrault was elected his successor.
