Henry Winfield Haldeman: A Biography

Early Life and Family

Henry Winfield Haldeman was born on June 21, 1848, in Mount Carroll, Illinois. His father was a local businessman and miller. Harry Haldeman attended Mount Carroll Seminary and later studied music at the Leipzig Conservatory in Germany. His mother married John H. Addams in 1868, making Harry the stepbrother of Jane Addams.

Medical Career

From 1873 to 1874, Haldeman studied medicine at the University of Michigan. He opened a medical practice in Iowa but later moved to Mitchellville, Iowa, where he earned his medical degree from Northwestern University in 1878. He continued his medical studies in Philadelphia in 1881.

Banking and Politics

After struggling as a doctor, Haldeman left medicine for politics and banking. In 1884, he moved to Girard, Kansas, where he became president of the local bank. Haldeman was also elected mayor of the city twice, serving from 1895 to 1899.

Personal Life

Haldeman's marriage to Sarah Alice Addams was unhappy. The couple had one child, Anna, who was born in 1887. In the 1890s, Haldeman began an affair with pianist Luella Totten, which may have lasted until his death.

Illness and Death

Haldeman's poor health was exacerbated by alcoholism. He suffered from heart problems and died of a heart attack on March 20, 1905, at the age of 56. His wife, Alice, later became president of the bank.

Legacy

Haldeman was a prominent figure in Girard, Kansas, and played an important role in the local community. His legacy also includes his daughter, Anna Marcet Haldeman, who became a successful feminist, playwright, and bank president.
