Henry Labouchere

Henry Labouchere was an influential English politician who held several prominent positions throughout his career.

Early Life

Labouchere was the brother of the radical politician Henry Labouchere. He entered the House of Commons in 1826, where he served for many years.

Government Roles

In 1846, Labouchere was appointed as secretary to the Viceroy of Ireland in the cabinet of John Russell. Later, in 1855, he became the Minister for the Colonies in Lord Palmerston's cabinet.

Notable Achievements

Labouchere was responsible for passing several significant laws, including the Merchant Shipping Act, which reformed regulations for the shipping industry.

Peerage

In recognition of his contributions, Labouchere was elevated to the peerage in 1859, receiving the title of Baron Taunton.
