Howie Hawkins: A Life of Activism and Politics
Early Life and EducationHowie Hawkins was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and grew up in a working-class family in Queens, New York. He attended Dartmouth College but dropped out in 1967 due to his dissatisfaction with the college's language requirement. While at Dartmouth, he became involved in student activism and founded the Dartmouth Radical Union.
Activism and Political Involvement
In 1972, Hawkins participated in Bernie Sanders' gubernatorial campaign in Vermont as a member of the Liberty Union Party. The following year, he joined the Socialist Party USA, where he has remained a member to this day. Hawkins has been active in anti-war, anti-nuclear, and labor movements since the 1960s.
Green Party and Presidential Campaigns
Hawkins co-founded the Green Party of the United States in 1991. He has run for office numerous times, including 25 unsuccessful attempts. In 2006, he ran for the U.S. Senate as the Green Party candidate for New York. He has also run for Governor of New York three times, first in 2010, again in 2014, and most recently in 2018. In 2017, he ran for Mayor of Syracuse.
Presidential Candidacy in 2020
In 2020, Hawkins was the presidential candidate for the Green Party, the Socialist Party USA, and Socialist Alternative USA. His campaign platform focused on implementing an eco-socialist "Green New Deal" and building an independent labor movement. He received 0.2% of the popular vote.
Professional Career
Outside of politics, Hawkins worked as a night shift UPS unloader from 2001 until his retirement in 2017. His working-class background has influenced his political views and activism.
