Early Life and Education
Dr. Inese Vaidere is a Latvian politician and economist with a doctoral degree in economics (Dr. oec). She defended her doctoral dissertation, "State Monopoly Regulation of Economic Regional Structures in the Federal Republic of Germany," in 1983.
Political Career
Vaidere became a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) in 1977 and served as party committee secretary at the Faculty of the University of Latvia. In 1990, she participated in the research program "Structural Economic Policy of the Federal Republic of Germany" at the Institute for World Economics in Kiel. Vaidere also worked as an associate professor at the University of Latvia.
Political Controversies
In late 2011 and early 2012, Vaidere made controversial statements against the Russian language, including comparing it to the Chukchi language, which led to accusations of inciting ethnic tension.
Member of the European Parliament
Since 2019, Vaidere has been a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) representing Latvia. She is a member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and also serves on the European Parliament's Intergroup on Combating Corruption and Organized Crime.
