The Early Years
Grigore Dic (1891-1938) was a Romanian communist and internationalist who played a prominent role in the Russian Revolution and the establishment of the Soviet Union. He began his involvement in the labor movement in 1909 and joined the Socialist Democratic Party of Romania in 1910, where he served as an editor of the newspaper "Working Romania."
World War I and the Russian Revolution
During World War I, Dic deserted from the Romanian army in 1916 and fled to Petrograd (now St. Petersburg). In April 1917, he joined the Bolshevik Party (RKP(b)) and became a correspondent for the party newspaper "Pravda." Dic actively participated in the October Revolution in November 1917 and worked in the People's Commissariat for Foreign Affairs (NKID) until December of that year.
Civil War and Political Activism
In 1918, Dic was appointed commissar of the Romanian Revolutionary Military Committee (RVK) in Odessa, Sevastopol, Feodosia, and Iasi, where he worked closely with Christian Rakovsky. From April 1919 to December 1920, he served as a political commissar on various fronts of the Russian Civil War.
From 1921 to 1922, Dic studied at the Frunze Military Academy. In 1924, he co-founded the Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (MASSR) and actively participated in the debate between "separatists" and "Romanians" over the development of a Moldavian literary language. Dic advocated for the radical Romanization of the MASSR.
Academic and Literary Career
From 1922 to 1937, Dic worked as a lecturer at the Communist University of National Minorities of the West named after Julian Marchlewski and the Communist University of the Toilers of the East in Moscow.
He was also the father of children's writer Iosif Dic (1922-1984).
Repression and DeathIn 1937, Dic was arrested and repressed along with a group of Romanian communists, including Alexandru Dobrogeanu-Gherea. He was executed on January 4, 1938.
