Early Life and Education
Born on August 28, 1893, in the village of Smetanino, Nikolai Nikolayevich Lebedev hailed from a priestly family in the former Vologhda Governorate (now Arkhangelsk Oblast). In 1917, he completed his medical studies at the Tomsk University Faculty of Medicine.
Medical Service
Returning to his hometown, Lebedev served as a district zemstvo physician at the Panfilov Hospital in Gryazovetsky Uyezd. After the Russian Revolution, he became assistant head of the evacuation point for the Northern Fleet. In 1921, he established an ambulance station in Vologda.
Public Health and Epidemiology
From 1923 onward, Lebedev held positions as deputy head of the city health department and chief sanitary inspector of Vologda. In 1931, he was appointed director of the Vologda Institute of Epidemiology and Bacteriology, where he pioneered the development of a device for chlorinating water, a first for the Soviet Union.
Research and Innovation
During World War II, Lebedev contributed to the war effort as a physician. Post-war, he dedicated himself to researching the mineral springs near Vologda, publishing over 40 scientific papers on the topic. In 1959, he founded the Vologda Balneological Clinic, which later bore his name.
Honors and Legacy
Lebedev's contributions earned him the title of Honored Physician of the RSFSR (1943) and the Order of the Red Banner of Labor. He was also awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor. In 1964, he became the first person to receive the title of Honorary Citizen of Vologda.
Death and Remembrance
Nikolai Nikolayevich Lebedev passed away in Vologda in 1969. His remains lie in the Poshekhonsky Cemetery. A second balneological clinic, "Novy Istochnik," was established in his honor in 1982. "Lebedev Readings," a scientific conference, commemorates his legacy.
