Biography of Jadranka Kosor

Jadranka Kosor is a Croatian stateswoman and politician, who previously worked as a journalist. She was born on July 1, 1953, in Pakrac, Croatia. Kosor completed her high school education in Pakrac and Lipik, and later attended the Faculty of Law at the University of Zagreb.

Journalistic Career

Kosor began her career as a journalist in 1972, working for a radio station in Zagreb. During the Croatian War of Independence, she served as a correspondent for the BBC. Her experience as a journalist provided her with valuable insights into the political landscape of Croatia.

Political Career

Kosor's political career started in 1995 when she was elected to the Croatian Parliament as a member of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ). She served as the Deputy Chairperson of the Parliament until 2000. Shortly after, she was elected as the Deputy Chairperson of the HDZ and held this position from 1995 to 2002.

In 2002, Kosor became the Deputy Chairperson of the HDZ and solidified her position within the party. In 2003, when the HDZ returned to power, she was appointed as the Minister for Family, Veterans, and Intergenerational Solidarity in the government. She also served as the Deputy Prime Minister during this time.

Candidacy for Presidency and Premiership

In 2005, Kosor ran for the presidency of Croatia, but was defeated in the second round by the incumbent President Stjepan Mesic. However, her political influence continued to grow within the HDZ.

In 2009, when the then-Prime Minister and HDZ leader Ivo Sanader resigned, he announced Kosor as his intended successor. On July 3, 2009, Kosor was appointed as the Acting Prime Minister, and on July 6, 2009, she was officially appointed as the Prime Minister by the parliament.

Kosor became the third woman in Croatian history to lead the government, considering the previous leaders of the Executive Council of the Socialist Republic of Croatia. However, she holds the distinction of being the first woman to hold this position in the independent Republic of Croatia.

Despite facing numerous challenges during her term, including economic difficulties and political scandals, Kosor managed to implement various reforms and steer the country through a challenging period.
