Early Life and Career
Jair da Costa, known as "Jairzinho," emerged from the youth ranks of Portuguesa and made his professional debut for the first team in 1960. His exceptional skills quickly caught the attention of the Brazilian national team coaches.
Unlikely Path to AC Milan and Inter
Despite being scouted by AC Milan, Jairzinho was rejected due to his perceived lack of physicality. However, Inter Milan saw his potential, and thanks to the intervention of president Angelo Moratti, he signed a contract with the club in 1962.
Serie A Success
Bureaucratic delays hindered Jairzinho's debut for Inter, but he made a resounding impact in his first match on November 1, 1962, against Genoa. Two minutes after entering the field, he scored a goal, securing a 3-1 victory for Inter.
Under Moratti's leadership, Jairzinho played a pivotal role in Inter's golden era, winning two Serie A championships (1963 and 1965), two European Cups (1964 and 1965), and two Intercontinental Cups (1964 and 1965).
International Career
Despite his remarkable club performances, Jairzinho's international career was limited to a single appearance due to the presence of the legendary Garrincha. He was part of the victorious Brazilian team at the 1962 World Cup in Chile, but he did not play in any matches.
Later Years
After an illustrious career in Italy, where he played for Inter Milan and AS Roma, Jairzinho returned to Brazil in 1972 to join Santos alongside Pelé. He won the Campeonato Paulista in 1973 before finishing his career with Canada's Windsor Stars in 1976.
Legacy
Jairzinho's legacy as a winger and goalscorer is etched in the annals of Brazilian and Italian football. With 286 official matches and 71 goals in Serie A, he was a key contributor to Inter Milan's dominance in the 1960s. Despite his limited international appearances, his talent and achievements remain a source of pride for Brazilian fans.
