Biography of James Rubin

James Philip 'Jamie' Rubin (born 1960) is a former diplomat and journalist. He is currently an adjunct professor at the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University and an informal advisor on international relations to US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama. Rubin worked at the State Department during Bill Clinton's presidency and later became a television journalist and commentator on Sky News.

Education and Early Career

Rubin graduated from Columbia University with a bachelor's degree in political science in 1982, and in 1984, he obtained a master's degree in international relations. After completing his studies, he worked as an assistant to the director of research at the Arms Control Association.

Government Service and Journalism

From 1997 to 2000, Rubin served under President Clinton as Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs and Chief Spokesman for the State Department. He was considered Madeline Albright's right-hand man in the Clinton administration. After leaving government, Rubin became an adjunct professor of international relations at the London School of Economics and a partner at the communication consulting firm Brunswick. He also hosted the program "Wide Angle" on PBS, which focused on international relations.

Political Advisor and Television News Anchor

Rubin served as the foreign policy advisor in General Wesley Clark's presidential campaign and later joined John Kerry's campaign, where he served as a senior advisor on national security. In October 2005, Rubin became the lead news anchor for the program "World News Tonight" on Sky News. However, the program was discontinued in July 2006 due to a restructuring of the channel's schedule.

Political Involvement

Rubin was a member of Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign in 2008. During his involvement, he caused controversy by calling Nobel Peace Prize laureate and former Irish Prime Minister Lord Trimble "crazy" for criticizing Hillary Clinton's role in the Northern Ireland peace process. The remark sparked a major scandal, but the issue was eventually resolved.

Rubin is married to CNN's chief international correspondent Christine Amanpour.
