Early Life and Education

Hermann was born into a Serbian-Lusatian family and pursued theological studies in Prague. Under the guidance of Václav Hanka, he developed a keen interest in Slavic studies.

Inaugural Publications

In 1837, Hermann penned his first article on the Lusatian Serbs. His pioneering work, "Grammar of the Wendisch-Serbian Language in Oberlausitz," published in 1841, was a significant contribution to Slavic linguistics.

Political Exile and German Publication

Political tensions prompted Hermann to leave Prague in the following year. He settled in Leipzig, where he founded the first German journal dedicated to Slavic studies: "Jahrbücher für slavische Literatur, Kunst und Wissenschaft" (1843).

Academic Career

Hermann became an active participant in Leipzig's academic scene. He lectured on Slavic studies at the university and edited the Serbian journal "Jutrnička." His scholarly pursuits further extended to the publication of "History of Russian Literature" (1846) and the compilation of Czech-German and Polish-German dictionaries.

Literary Collaboration

Notably, some of Hermann's works were published under the name of the Czech writer, Klascel. This collaboration showcased the intellectual exchange that characterized his scholarship.
