Jean-Claude Gaudin: A Political Journey
Jean-Claude Gaudin, a prominent French politician, was born in Marseille on October 8, 1939. He was the son of a stonemason and a worker in a rope factory.
Early Career
Before entering politics, Gaudin spent 15 years as a history and geography teacher. In 1965, he began his political career by joining the National Center of Independents and Peasants party and being elected to the Marseille Municipal Council. He held various positions in various right-wing parties as they reorganized.
Political Ascent
In 1978, Gaudin was elected to the National Assembly from the 2nd constituency of Bouches-du-Rhône, a seat he held until 1989. He also served as a deputy in the Bouches-du-Rhône General Council from 1982 to 1988 and as mayor of the 6th and 8th arrondissements of Marseille from 1983 to 1989.
In 1986, Gaudin became president of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur regional council, a position he held until 1998. He also served as a senator for France from 1989 to 2017.
Mayor of Marseille
On June 25, 1995, Gaudin was elected mayor of Marseille. He remained in this position for 25 years until 2020, making him one of the longest-serving mayors in France.
During his time as mayor, Gaudin held other ministerial positions, including Minister of Territorial Development, Cities, and Integration in Alain Juppé's second government from 1995 to 1997.
Retirement from Politics
In June 2017, Gaudin announced that he would not seek re-election as mayor. In the 2020 municipal elections, the left-wing coalition led by Michèle Rubirola defeated Gaudin's party. On July 4, 2020, Rubirola was elected as the new mayor of Marseille.
