Club Career
Mathieu gained popularity and recognition when representatives from 'Barcelona' showed interest in him. He started playing football in his childhood with friends and eventually began playing for amateur clubs as a teenager. In the late 1990s, he caught the attention of scouts from several football academies. In 2000, Mathieu joined the youth academy of the professional French team 'Sochaux' and spent two years there. In 2002, he signed a contract with the club and made his debut in the same season against 'CS Sedan'. The 18-year-old quickly established himself as a central defender and won the hearts of fans who saw him as a guarantee of success in the coming seasons. Mathieu's talent helped 'Sochaux' finish the season in 5th place and qualify for the UEFA Cup.
Move to 'Toulouse FC' and 'Valencia'
After gaining attention from several major clubs such as 'Juventus', 'Newcastle United', 'Everton', and 'Southampton', Mathieu decided to join the French club 'Toulouse FC' after his contract with 'Sochaux' expired. He played for 'Toulouse FC' for four seasons, making over 110 appearances and participating in international tournaments like the UEFA Champions League. In 2009, Mathieu moved to the Spanish club 'Valencia', where he played 126 matches and showcased his skills as a top-level defender.
Transfer to 'Barcelona'
