Jole Santelli: A Prominent Italian Politician and Lawyer

Early Life and Education

Jole Santelli was born on December 28, 1968, in Cosenza, Italy. She graduated from Sapienza University of Rome, specializing in criminal law and procedure.

Legal Career

Santelli practiced law at the law firms of Tina Lagostena Bassi and Cesare Previti.

Political Journey

Santelli began her political career in the Socialist Party before joining Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia party in 1994. She served as a member of the Italian Parliament from 2001 to 2020, representing Forza Italia, the People of Freedom, and the new Forza Italia.

From 2001 to 2006, she held the position of Undersecretary of State for Justice in the second and third Berlusconi governments. She also served as Undersecretary of State for Labor and Social Policy in the Letta government.

Regional Politics

In 2014, Berlusconi appointed Santelli as the regional coordinator of Forza Italia in Calabria. She became Deputy Mayor of Cosenza and Municipal Assessor for Cultural Policy on June 28, 2016.

Governor of Calabria

In 2019, Santelli was chosen as the candidate for governor of Calabria in the 2020 regional elections. She led a coalition of right-wing parties and was elected on January 26, 2020, becoming the first female governor of Calabria. She assumed office on February 15, 2020.

Death and Legacy

Tragically, Santelli passed away at home on October 15, 2020, due to cancer. Her passing was a great loss to Italian politics. Vice Governor Antonino Spirlì became the acting head of the regional government.

Jole Santelli's legacy as a strong and influential politician will forever be remembered in Calabria and throughout Italy.
