Lithuanian Writer and Poet

Early Life and Education

Petras Cvirka(1909-1947) was a renowned Lithuanian writer and poet. Born into poverty, he moved with his parents to Zagare at a young age, where he attended primary school.

Military Service

In 1919, Cvirka enlisted in the Cavalry Regiment in Kaunas and later graduated from military school. He served as a hussar in the "Iron Wolf" Regiment while also pursuing higher education at the Lithuanian University in Kaunas.

Collaboration and Imprisonment

During World War II, Cvirka actively contributed to Lithuanian publications, heading the cultural section of the newspapers "Laisve" and "Ateitis." However, his collaboration with German-controlled media led to his arrest in 1945. He was sentenced to imprisonment in Vorkuta, Russia.

Return and Legacy

Cvirka was released and returned to Lithuania in 1958. He passed away in Kaunas and was buried in Zagare.

Literary Contributions

Cvirka became an integral member of the Lithuanian avant-garde movement known as the "Four Winds" group, led by Kazys Binkis. His controversial "nervous poem" "Anyksciu Silelis" (1930) was a travesty of Antanas Baranauskas's classic poem "Anyksciu Silelis." He also published a collection of short stories titled "Gyvenimo Novele" (1940).
