SS Untersturmführer Janis Senbergs

Military Service and Awards

Janis Senbergs served in either the 19th Waffen SS Grenadier Division (2nd Latvian) or the 15th Waffen SS Grenadier Division (1st Latvian). He was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross for his actions during the Battle of Berlin in May 1945.

Controversy Over Knight's Cross

The circumstances surrounding Senbergs' Knight's Cross nomination and award are unclear. His nomination was received via teletype on April 5, 1945, but processing records were lost during the war. In 2004, the German National Archives stated that it could not verify whether Senbergs received the award. However, the Order Commission of the Association of Knight's Cross Holders (AKKR) concluded in 1981 that he had been awarded the Knight's Cross on May 9, 1945.

Discrepancies in Recognition

Due to the uncertainty surrounding Senbergs' Knight's Cross, some reference works do not include him as a recipient of the award, such as Arturs Silgailis' "Latviesu legions" (1961).
