Jeffrey Kagel was born in New York City on May 31, 1947, into a Jewish family. In 1969, he embarked on a journey to India, where he encountered Ram Dass and received spiritual initiation from the Hindu guru Neem Karoli Baba. The guru bestowed upon him the spiritual name "Krishna Das," meaning "Servant of Krishna."

Throughout the years, Krishna Das studied Buddhist meditation practices and bhakti-yoga. He witnessed the efficacy of kirtan, a form of Hindu devotional singing, firsthand in India.
