Maya Sandu: A Trailblazing Moldovan Politician
Early Life and EducationMaya Sandu was born on May 24, 1972, in the village of Risipeni, Moldova. The daughter of farmers, she pursued higher education at the Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova and the Academy of Public Administration under the President of Moldova. She later earned a degree from the Harvard Kennedy School.
Personal Life
Sandu is unmarried and has no children. She has denied allegations of being a member of the LGBTQ community. Despite her lack of a traditional family, she maintains close ties with her extended family and enjoys homemade meals prepared by her aunts.
Career and Politics
Sandu began her career in the 1990s at the International Economic Cooperation Office in Moldova. She later worked at the World Bank's office in Chisinau and in Washington, D.C.
Sandu is a strong advocate for Moldova's European integration. She believes that economic and practical ties with Russia should be based on mutual benefit. She has also criticized Russian influence in Moldova, particularly through the Orthodox Church.
Minister of Education and Prime Minister
From 2012 to 2015, Sandu served as Moldova's Minister of Education. During her tenure, she implemented reforms to reduce the role of the Russian language in education and make English compulsory.
In 2019, Sandu became Moldova's Prime Minister, serving for five months. During this time, she appointed a government focused on fighting corruption and economic reforms.
Presidential Candidacy
In 2016, Sandu unsuccessfully ran for President of Moldova, placing second in both the first and second rounds. In 2020, she again ran for President, this time against the incumbent, Igor Dodon.
Election Victory
On November 1, 2020, Sandu was elected President of Moldova with 57.75% of the vote. She became the first female President in the country's history.
Presidential Agenda
As President, Sandu has outlined ambitious goals. She plans to fight corruption, dismantle the current Parliament, and call for early parliamentary elections. She aims to improve Moldova's relations with Europe and strengthen the country's democratic institutions.
