Biography of Vladimir Voronin

Vladimir Voronin, the current President of Moldova, was born on May 25, 1941 in the village of Korzhova Dubossary District, near Chisinau. He is an engineer-economist, political scientist, and lawyer. Voronin graduated from the Cooperative Technical College of Chisinau in 1961, the All-Union Correspondence Institute of Food Industry in 1971, the Academy of Social Sciences under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1983, and the Academy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the USSR in 1991.

Voronin began his professional career in 1961 as the head of a bakery in the village of Kriulen. He later became the director of the bakery and then the director of a bread factory in Dubossary. In the following years, he worked in various positions in the government, including chairman of the city executive committee in Dubossary and head of the city executive committee in Ungheni. In 1983, he became an inspector and deputy head of the organizational department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Moldova. In 1985, he was appointed head of the department of the Council of Ministers of the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic. From 1985 to 1989, he served as the first secretary of the Bendery City Committee of the party.

In 1989, Voronin became the Minister of Internal Affairs of the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic. In 1993, he was elected co-chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Communist Party of the Republic of Moldova. In 1994, he was elected the first secretary of the Communist Party of Moldova. In 1996, he ran as a presidential candidate in the elections of the Republic of Moldova.

Voronin has been a member of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova since 1998. He served as the chairman of the parliamentary faction of the Communist Party of Moldova and was elected president of the country on April 4, 2001. During the parliamentary elections in March 2005, Voronin's Communist Party won and he was re-elected as the president on April 4, 2005.
