Early Life and Family
Martiros Sergeevich Saryan was born on February 27 (old style), 1880, in Nakhichevan-on-Don, near Rostov-on-Don, into a traditional Armenian family. His childhood and adolescence were spent secluded on his family's remote farm.
Artistic Education and Travels
In 1897, Saryan enrolled at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture. Two years later, influenced by his brother, Ovanes, he embarked on his first pilgrimage to Armenia. His travels to Lori, Shirak, and Ani ignited a deep connection to his ancestral homeland.
Artistic Journey
Throughout the early 1900s, Saryan embarked on numerous travels seeking inspiration. He visited Constantinople, Egypt, Persia, and southern Armenia. These experiences shaped his unique artistic style, characterized by vibrant colors and a profound love for his native land.
Armenia's Tragic History and Saryan's Response
The outbreak of World War I in 1914 coincided with the Armenian Genocide. Saryan dedicated himself to the cause of his beleaguered people, aiding refugees and actively advocating for their survival.
Return to Armenia and Artistic Triumphs
In 1917, Saryan returned to Armenia with his family. He immersed himself in creating iconic works celebrating his homeland, including "The Mountains," "Armenia," and "My Yard." In 1923, his paintings received critical acclaim at the 14th Venice Biennale.
Parisian Interlude and Artistic Resilience
Despite his international recognition, Saryan's deep attachment to Armenia remained unwavering. Even during his brief sojourn in Paris in 1926-1928, he continued to paint the landscapes of his beloved homeland. A tragic fire on the ship carrying his works back to Armenia devastated him, but his creative spirit persevered.
