Early Life and Education
Maizie Hirono was born on November 3, 1947, in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. Although born in Japan, her mother was an American citizen. In 1955, Hirono relocated to the United States with her mother and brother, settling in Honolulu. She graduated from high school and pursued her undergraduate studies at the University of Hawaii, graduating in 1970 with a Bachelor's degree in psychology. Hirono later enrolled at Georgetown University Law Center, earning her Juris Doctor degree in 1978. She returned to Hawaii and began practicing law.
Political Career
After serving in the Hawaii State Legislature from 1980 to 1994, Hirono was elected as the state's Lieutenant Governor in 1994 and re-elected in 1998, serving until December 2002. In 2002, she ran unsuccessfully for Governor of Hawaii. In November 2006, Hirono was elected to the United States House of Representatives for Hawaii's 2nd Congressional District, serving three terms from 2007 to 2013.
United States Senate
In November 2012, Maizie Hirono made history as the first Asian-American woman elected to the United States Senate. She represents the state of Hawaii and serves on several Senate committees, including Armed Services, Veterans' Affairs, and Environment and Public Works.
