Early Successes

Kiefer's rise in the tennis world was evident from a young age. On January 10, 2000, he reached a career-high ranking of 4th in the world. Even as a junior player, Kiefer became known for his superstitions. He would often tap his racket against the corners of the court after winning a point and frequently requested the same ball he used in a previous successful serve.

Controversial Moments

On January 25, 2006, during a quarterfinal match at the Australian Open against Sebastien Grosjean, Kiefer threw his racket to the side either accidentally or intentionally. Grosjean hit the ball into the net, losing the point. Grosjean claimed that the flying racket distracted him, but the referee, Carlos Bernardes, deemed Kiefer's actions unintentional. Kiefer went on to reach the semifinals of the tournament but lost to eventual champion Roger Federer.

At the French Open in 2006, Kiefer injured his wrist, leading him to take a break from the sport. He returned to the court on July 5, 2007, with a significantly lower ranking of 404th in the ATP rankings. Kiefer faced early exits in the Gerry Weber Open and Wimbledon, losing in the first round and the third round, respectively. However, he reached the semifinals of the tournament in Los Angeles and Madrid, defeating Federer in Madrid.

Ups and Downs

In 2008, Kiefer struggled at the start of the season. He was eliminated in the first round of the Australian Open by former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero. Kiefer faced early exits in the Indian Wells Masters, Miami Masters, Monte Carlo Masters, and Rome Masters. However, he regained his form at the Hamburg Masters, reaching the quarterfinals by defeating Stanislas Wawrinka and Nikolay Davydenko. Kiefer lost in the third round of Wimbledon to Rafael Nadal but made it to the final of the 2008 Canada Masters, his first Masters series final. Although he lost to Nadal again, Kiefer climbed to the 19th position in the world rankings.

In 2009, Kiefer represented Germany at the Hopman Cup, partnering with Sabine Lisicki. While he won two mixed doubles matches, he lost both of his singles matches and suffered an ankle injury in the third singles match, forcing him to withdraw from the Australian Open. Kiefer returned to action during the Davis Cup but continued to struggle with injuries throughout the year, including back problems. Nevertheless, he participated in several important tournaments and represented Germany in international competitions.
