Early Life and Education
Nir Barkat was born in Jerusalem into a family with deep academic roots. His father was a renowned physics professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where Barkat later pursued a degree in computer science.
Military Service and Entrepreneurial Venture
After completing his studies, Barkat served with distinction in the Israel Defense Forces, rising to the rank of Major. In 1988, he founded a company that specialized in developing innovative anti-virus software.
Political Ascent
On November 11, 2008, Barkat entered the political arena and emerged victorious in the mayoral election for the city of Jerusalem, securing an impressive 52% of the votes.
Re-election and Support
In 2013, Barkat sought re-election as Mayor of Jerusalem. Backed by the Labor Party and receiving tacit support from the Meretz Party, he successfully retained his position with a similar majority to his first term.
