Political Career
Olfa Kefalogianni is a Greek politician and lawyer currently serving as a Member of Parliament for the New Democracy party since 2007. She previously served as Greece's Minister of Tourism under the government of Antonis Samaras from 2012 to 2015.
Early Life and Education
Kefalogianni was born in Athens on April 29, 1975. She graduated from Athens College in 1992 with honors and pursued her legal studies at the University of Athens. She participated in the Erasmus program at the University of Essex Law School in 1994-1995.
In 1997, she obtained her law degree from the University of Athens and went on to earn an LLM in commercial and corporate law from King's College London in 1998. She completed a second LLM in international relations from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in Boston in 2006.
Legal Career
Kefalogianni was admitted to the Athens Bar Association in 1999. She worked for law firms in Athens and New York City, as well as a legal advisor to companies. She also served in the legal service of the European Commission in Brussels.
Political Involvement
From 2004 to 2006, Kefalogianni was a special associate for legal affairs to former Prime Minister Konstantinos Karamanlis. She was also a founding member of the Research and Development Institute in Rethymno in 2004.
Kefalogianni was elected as a Member of Parliament for the Rethymno constituency in Crete in the 2007 and 2009 general elections. She was elected to represent the prestigious First District of Athens in the May 6, 2012 elections. She was re-elected on June 17, 2012, January 25, 2015, and July 7, 2019.
Minister of Tourism
In June 2012, Prime Minister Antonis Samaras appointed Kefalogianni as Minister of Tourism. She held the position until the change of government in January 2015.
Other Endeavors
Kefalogianni has written a book titled "The Role of the EU in the Cyprus Issue" ( Η Ρόλη της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης στο Κυπριακό Ζήτημα). She is fluent in English, French, and Spanish.
