Olli Rehn
Early Life and EducationBorn in Mikkeli, Finland, Olli Rehn earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, majoring in economics, international relations, and journalism. He later obtained a Master of Political Science degree from the University of Helsinki.
Political Career in Finland
Rehn joined the Centre Party and held various leadership positions within the organization. He served as a member of the Finnish Parliament before being elected to the European Parliament in 1995.
Work in the European Parliament
In 2004, Rehn became Commissioner for Enterprise and Information Society in the Romano Prodi Commission for a brief period. He then served as Commissioner for Enlargement of the European Union from November 2004.
European Commissioner
On February 9, 2010, Rehn was appointed European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs. From October 27, 2011, he became Vice-President of the European Commission. During his tenure, Rehn staunchly defended the European Union's positions both domestically in Finland and internationally from the IMF.
Return to Finnish Politics
In July 2014, Rehn became Vice-President of the European Parliament for 2.5 years. However, in May 2015, he returned to Finnish politics as Minister of Economic Affairs in the Sipilä Cabinet. He held this position until December 29, 2016.
Governor of the Bank of Finland
On May 18, 2018, Rehn was appointed as the new Governor of the Bank of Finland, succeeding Erkki Liikanen. He assumed office on July 12, 2018.
