Biography of Hovhannes Abelian

Hovhannes Abelian was a renowned Armenian actor and theatrical figure, honored as the People's Artist of the Armenian and Azerbaijani SSRs in 1932. He was born on October 23 (November 4), 1865, in the city of Shemakha in Azerbaijan.

Early Career and International Success

Abelian started his stage career in 1882 in Baku. He embarked on numerous tours across Russia, Ukraine, Central Asia, as well as Turkey, Iran, Egypt, Germany, France, and the United States. His talent and versatility as an actor allowed him to captivate audiences worldwide.

Artistic Contributions

From 1925, Abelian worked at the Sundukyan Armenian Theater in Yerevan, and later at the Armenian Theater in Baku. His performances were characterized by realism and a wide range of expressive techniques. Some of his best-known roles include Elizbarov, Barkhudar, and Gizh Danel in the plays "Because of Honor," "Namus," and "The Evil Spirit" by Shirvanzade, respectively. He also excelled as Pepo in the eponymous play by Sundukyan, Brave Nazar in Demirchyan's play "Brave Nazar," Uncle Bagdasar in Paronyan's play "Uncle Bagdasar," and Neschastlivtsev in Ostrovsky's "The Forest." Abelian also portrayed Othello and King Lear in Shakespeare's plays, as well as Yegor Bulychev in Gorky's "Yegor Bulychev and Others."

Legacy

Hovhannes Abelian passed away in Yerevan on July 1, 1936. In 1936, the Vanadzor State Drama Theater was named after him, honoring his contributions to the world of theater.
